Shanghai Jiao Tong University CCOE Summary

About CCOE at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)
Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been an NVIDIA CUDA Center of Excellence (CCOE) since 2011, led by High Performance Computing Center(HPCC). SJTU was awarded for building a large scale heterogeneous CUDA-enabled super computer, diversity research of scientific, engineering and medical applications, as well as teaching course for “agile” parallel computing with CUDA. With the vision of “Bring Many-core Thinking to High End Research and Education”, SJTU CCOE will be NVIDIA’s parallel computing training center to play big influence rule in both academic and industry of China.
HPCC will spearhead the university’s CCOE program in partnership with a number of other departments and labs at SJTU, including Institute of Natural Science (INS), MoE Key Lab for Laser Plasmas (LLP), School of Aeronautics and Astronautics (SAA), School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering (NAOCE), Institute of Image Communication and Information Processing (ICIP), , and Network & Information Center (NIC). The following is a sample of the CUDA related Research projects:
- Particle-in-cell Simulations for Laser Plasmas Interaction Physics (Prof. Zhenming Shen, LLP)
- Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Solver for High-speed Flow (Prof. Hong Liu, SAA)
- Ion transport and selectivity with applications in drug design and disease study (Prof. Weicai, INS)
- RANS CFD Solver for Civil Jet (A.P. Fang Chen, SAA)
- Hydrodynamics Computational Fluid Dynamics on GPU (A.P. Benlong Wang, NAOCE)
- Botnets, DNS security and Website security (Prof. Weinong Wang, NIC)
- Capturing Human Body and Action in 3-D: Real Time Dense Voxel Reconstruction and Marker-less Motion Tracking via GPU Acceleration (Dr. Xu Zhao, ICIP)
SJTU will invite Shanghai Supercomputer Center (SSC) and CAPS Enterprise to join CCOE as founding partners.
- Under direction of Puyong Wang, vice director of SSC, they will work with SJTU CCOE closely to explore how to migrate existing large-scale MPI applications running in SSC to CUDA across large amounts of GPU nodes.
- Francois Bodin, CTO of CAPSEnterprise, will help SJTU CCOE to promote OpenACC and HMPP in Asia Pacific and Japan.
About Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)
An imperial edict issued in 1896 by Emperor Guangxu, established Nanyang Public School in Shanghai. Sheng Xuanhuai, the person responsible for proposing the idea to the emperor, became the first president and is regarded as the founder of the university.
Since the reform and opening up policy in China, SJTU has taken the lead in management reform of institutions for higher education, regaining its vigor and vitality with an unprecedented momentum of growth. SJTU includes five beautiful campuses, Xuhui, Minhang, Luwan Qibao, and Fahua, taking up an area of about 3,225,833 m2. A number of disciplines have been advancing towards the top echelon internationally, and a batch of burgeoning branches of learning have taken an important position domestically.
Today SJTU has 31 schools (departments), 63 undergraduate programs, 250 masters-degree programs, 203 Ph.D. programs, 28 post-doctorate programs, and 11 state key laboratories and national engineering research centers.
SJTU boasts a large number of famous scientists and professors, including 33 academics of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 92 accredited professors and chair professors of the "Cheung Kong Scholars Program" and more than 1,900 professors and associate professors.
About the PIs
James Lin, is senior technical leader of HPCC and director of HPC Laboratory in NIC at SJTU. He is interested in parallel computing and many-core programming. He has been technical director of Microsoft HPC Innovative institute at SJTU during year 2005 to 2008, and was rewarded as academic partnership program from NVIDIA in year 2010. He co-founded the first HMPP Competence Center in year 2011.
Yizhong Gu, is director of NIC and also in charge of HPCC at SJTU. He has more than 25 years experience in network-based computing. Since year 1994, he has been PI of campus intranet project at SJTU. In recently years, he has involved in establishing China Education & Research Net (CERNET) and CERNET2, and 3Tnet of high-tech research project funded by MoST. He was awarded as “best ten CIOs in Shanghai” in year 2010.
