# Kazan Federal University CUDA Research Center Summary

**About the CUDA Research Center at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of Kazan Federal University**

Founded in 1804, Kazan Federal University is the second oldest university in the Russian Federation. An internationally acknowledged center of academic excellence, it is routinely listed among the 5 to 10 best institutions of higher education in the country. Since the day of the Kazan University foundation, its scientific traditions have been inseparable from the achievements of Kazan mathematicians and mechanics. In 1961 the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics was registered as an independent unit when it split from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In 2011 the Faculty has been transformed into the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics.

The CUDA Research Center at the Lobachevsky Institute has been formed at 2009. Researchers at the center develop and apply numerical methods and computational algorithms to solution of various scientific problems. Area of research interests covers computational hydrodynamics, solid state mechanics, geophysical processes, intelligent information processing systems, THMC problems, etc.

**About the co-PIs****Alexander Elizarov** is a vice-director of Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics at Kazan Federal University. He received his D.Sc. degree in mechanics of fluids and gases. His research interests include mathematical models, optimal control, free boundary problems, functional analysis, functions of complex variables, differential equations of mathematical physics, methods and software systems for parallel computing on multiprocessor computer systems (clusters). He is a leading scientist in information technologies and mathematical modeling. He also acts as a director of Kazan Branch of Joint Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

**Andrey Egorov **is head of Hydromechanics section at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He received his D.Sc. degree in mechanics of fluids and gases. His research interests include hydromechanics, mathematical models, homogenization theory. He is a leading scientist in mathematical modeling of mass and heat transfer processes in porous media.

**Eugene Biryaltsev** is head of the Database Technology laboratory at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. The area of scientific and practical interests includes intelligent information processing systems and modeling of geophysical processes. He is the author of the microseismic method of prospecting for oil and gas, based on intensive use of high performance computing.

**Denis Demidov** is a senior researcher in High Performance Computing section at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He received Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 2006 from Kazan State University. His research interests include computational fluid dynamics, high performance computing and numerical methods. He uses GPU computing for acceleration of oil and gas simulations and for solution of various problems of hydrodynamics and solid state mechanics. He also maintains small GPU cluster at Lobachevsky Institute.

**Marat Galimov** is a senior researcher in High Performance Computing section at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering in 2005 at Kazan State Technical University. His research interests include oil and gas reservoir simulation and modeling of geophysical processes. He develops software systems for parallel computing with Java bindings for NVIDIA CUDA.

**Edward Khramchenkov **is a senior researcher in High Performance Computing section at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 2008 from Kazan State University. His research interests include mathematical simulations of biochemical processes in blood clots, for example formation of the clot in a blood vessel and thrombolysis. He is also working in the area of mathematical simulation of various processes in dissolvable porous media on the basis of tridimensional non-stationary models.

**Timur Zaripov** is a researcher in Hydrodynamics section at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He graduated from Faculty of Computer Science and Cybernetics in 2006. His scientific interest is the air disperse flow in porous structures: air filtration. He uses CUDA technology to solve the problem of motion of charged and neutral aerosol particles in inhomogeneous gas flow.

**Artur Gilfanov** is a researcher in Hydrodynamics section at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He also acts as an assistant lecturer in Institute of Ecology and Geography. He graduated from Faculty of Computer Science and Cybernetics in 2006. His scientific interests are air disperse flow in the aerosol sampling and inhalation problems. He uses parallel computing capabilities of NVIDIA GPU to calculate the motion of disperse pollutions in inhomogeneous gas flow.

**Artem Nuriev** is a post-graduate student at Lobachevsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, Kazan Federal University. He received his M.Sc. in Mechanics in 2010. His research interests include computational fluid dynamics and applied bifurcation analysis. His current project is dedicated to bifurcation analysis of 2D Navier-Stokes system of equations. His research includes methods for location of different solutions, continuation of solution branches and identification of local bifurcations of the system. He uses GPU-based algorithms to improve computational performance.
