Jos was born in the Netherlands and educated in Switzerland and Canada. He holds dual bachelor degrees from the University of Geneva: Computer Science (1988) and Mathematics (1989). He then moved to Canada to study at the University of Toronto where he got a Masters (1991) and a PhD (1995) in Computer Science. At the same time he worked part time for Alias where he contributed to Power Animator’s particle system. After obtaining his PhD Jos went back to Europe to do two post docs: one at INRIA in France near Paris and one at VTT in Finland near Helsinki. Then in 1997 he got a job with alias|wavefront in Seattle. There he did work that eventually got him 4 academy awards: Maya 2002, subdivision 2006 and 2019, and fluids 2008. In 2003 Jos moved back to Toronto to work for Alias which was subsequently acquired by Autodesk in 2006. Jos also received the SIGGRAPH Technical Achievement award in 2005 and joined the SIGGRAPH Academy in 2018. In 2019 he joined NVIDIA’s office in Toronto to work on Machine Learning and Computer Graphics.
