Vinu’s [research](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vinujoseph.org%2Fresearch&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNFsGWgqCQc1pQZ5bPPU-9-8KIhJQg) focuses on optimizing deep neural network based systems for performance and scalability. More broadly, His research is at the intersection of systems, programming languages and machine learning, to create a more efficient, performant, secure, privacy-preserving and correct software. His PhD research has been mainly focused on deep neural network compression for resource efficient inference and robustness. He has considerable experience constructing [tools](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vinujoseph.org%2Fresearch&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNFsGWgqCQc1pQZ5bPPU-9-8KIhJQg) capable of leveraging the power of GPUs for machine learning computing. He is also interested in applying machine learning to [challenging problems](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vinujoseph.org%2Fresearch%23h.p_G0FhxlePMW15&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNE_yp6FvX0r3LVbXnCQo33GJ-h3Bg) within programming systems.

Vinu received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the [School of Computing](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cs.utah.edu%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNH5cPE3pcM9qAcSb5jscxAPYYV02A) at the [University of Utah, Salt Lake City,](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.utah.edu%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNH8dOdVudXddX6pyB6AXvEJURKXfw) working on efficient deep learning computing, robustness and security of deep learning algorithms, advised by Prof. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan. He is one of the five recipients of the [NVIDIA Graduate fellowship](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nvidia.com%2Fen-us%2Fresearch%2Fgraduate-fellowships%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNHlCVkOQc84YUv35mhzMlmr-H86tA), the recipients were selected based on their academic achievements and area of research. Prior to graduate studies, Vinu worked at [ARM](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.arm.com%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEJ1Oi49WSS4arhzsr7hYvUiUrTpQ)[ Inc.](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.arm.com%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEJ1Oi49WSS4arhzsr7hYvUiUrTpQ) During his tenure at ARM, he was a recipient of the Bravo award for developing the *programmer’s model for verifying* [*real-time (‘R’) profile architecture*](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fdeveloper.arm.com%2Farchitectures%2Fcpu-architecture%2Fr-profile&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNG87I2_-sTChI6rx-blaDxkcdCeSg) *which provides high-performing processors for safety-critical environments.*

Vinu received his bachelor’s degree at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering from [CMR Institute of Technology, Bangalore](http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cmrit.ac.in%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEn8tLLzUCKsLfE66VwB4JQuyMF4A), affiliated to the [Visvesvaraya Technological University](http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fbangalore&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEcbXCkqPEF0_rqC8kPvjTu11mBgg) and his Undergraduate research was on efficient double-precision floating point arithmetic on FPGAs at [National Aerospace Laboratory, India.](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nal.res.in%2Fen&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNFgfruPFCefMlOledILAOkrOvVi0A)

In his spare time, He has committed to mentor the next generation of CS/AI researchers, helping bright undergraduates in STEM (School of Computing) bootstrap their research careers,
