Ravi Ramamoorthi is the Ronald L. Graham Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, San Diego and founding Director of the UCSD Center for Visual Computing. He has been working part-time at NVIDIA Research since January 2021, and is currently a Distinguished Research Scientist, Graphics. He earlier held tenured faculty appointments at Columbia and Berkeley, in all of which he played a major role in building world-leading groups in computer graphics and vision. In industry, he was a consultant for Pixar, and computational imaging startups, Lytro, Pelican and Light. He has served on the Technical Advisory Board of Pelican Imaging and Proprio Vision. Ravi received his PhD from Stanford University in 2002 and BS and MS degrees from Caltech in 1998. He is an author of more than 200 papers in computer graphics and computer vision, and has received about twenty major awards including the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award in 2007, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2008, and more recently, induction as a fellow of IEEE, ACM and the SIGGRAPH Academy, and an inagurual Frontiers of Science Award. Ravi has introduced widely used theoretical representations and computational methods such as spherical harmonic lighting and neural radiance fields, and widely adopted methods in industry such as Monte Carlo denoising. He also developed the first online computer graphics MOOC, as one of the first nine classes on the edX platform, and is a two-time recipient of the edX Prize Certificate for exceptional online teaching. He has graduated more than 30 postdoctoral and Ph.D. students, whose theses have been recognized by the ACM Dissertation Award honorable mention, the ACM SIGGRAPH outstanding dissertation award and the UCSD Chancellor’s Dissertation Medal.
