Sander Tonkens is a Research Intern with the Autonomous Vehicle Group for the Summer of 2023. He is also a Ph.D. student at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where he is advised by Prof. Sylvia Herbert. He received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Sander’s main research interests lie at the intersection of control theory and machine learning, aiming to provide probabilistic safe decision making for embodied AI systems.
In his spare time, Sander dabbles in almost all sports but particularly enjoys skiing, biking, backpacking, and surfing.
